Positive and Negative Reinforcement (Blog #6)

Classical conditioning deals with association that are made between a natural stimulus and a learned, neutral stimulus. On the other side is Operant conditioning. Operant conditioning results from one's actions and the consequences they cause. Many times this conditioning is a result of reinforcements, both positive and negative.

Your Assignment:

1.) Define both negative and positive reinforcements.
2.) Come up with real life examples, (preferably school or extra-curricular activities, but could be outside of school) that show negative and positive reinforcements.

Due: Sunday 2/20/11 by no later than 11:59p.m.

  1. 1.)Negative reinforcements: occurs when something unpleasant is stopped or taken away if the organism does something.
Positive: occurs when something the organiam want is added on after an action.
2.)Getting good grades results in honor roll (positive). Get three tardies results in having to stay in (negative). Throw something in the classroom results in having to stay in (negative). Get good grades results in praise (positive).

  2. 1.) Negative reinforcements would be like punishments. Positive reinforcements would be awards.

2.) If you get all A's for the quarter your on all A Honor Roll and get a medal. If you fail a smester of some required class then you will have to retake a semester of that class.

  3. A positive reinforcement is the strengthening of the tendency to repeat a response by following it with the addition of something pleasant.

Negative reinforcement is the strengthening of a response by following it with taking away or avoiding something unpleasant.

An example in school for positive is that if a person gets on the Honor Roll Mrs. Brown will let them go to lunch early and if they get all "A" they usually get some good tasting dessert. An example of negative reinforcement is when kids don't keep their grades up then they get put on the down list and they don't get to play sports.

  4. Positive reinforcement is when something the person wants is added after an action. Negative reinforcement is when something is taken away after an action.

In school if you act out then you get detention. At home if you mouth off you can get things taken away (ie. car, phone, computer, ipod). In school if you do something well you could get a sticker like in english. At home if you are responsible then you could get to do more thing like go out with friends.

  6. Positive reinforcements are stimuli that aide the subject in reaction to certain scenarios.
Negative reinforcements are stimuli that puinsh a subject in reaction to certain scenarios.

Positive reinforcements in golf would be practicing putting, and resulting in winning a tournament due to the number of putts taken. Negative would be playing a round of golf, and every shot that goes out of bounds counts as two strokes, and, poof, golf rules were born.

  7. 1) Positive reinforcement results in lasting behavioral modification. It's the adding of an appetitive stimulus to increase a certain behavior or response. Negative reinforcement is the taking of an aversive stimulus to increase certain behavior or response.
    Positive is getting "rewards"
    Negative is getting "punishment"

2)An example of negative and positive reinforcements in the school is one acts, if you work hard at acting and memorization you get a leading role (positive), if you do not you get set crew or a non speaking line (negative).

  8. 1. Negative Reinforcement strengthens a behavior because a negative condition is stopped or avoided as a consequence of the behavior.
    2. Positive Reinforcement is anything that occurs after a behavior that increases the likelihood that the behavior will reoccur.
The concept of Negative Reinforcement is difficult to teach and learn because of the word negative.
Many teachers do not believe in Positive Reinforcement because they do not want to reward students for just doing what is expected.

  9. Negative reinforcement strenghtens a behavior because a negative condition is stopped. Positive reinforcement strengthes a behavior because a positive condition is increased.
One negative reinforment is during practice when the coach blows the whistle because you've done something wrong. This lets you know what you've done wrong abd its not a punishment, One positive reinforment is when little kids get stickers for going to the bathroom during potty training. This lets them know they've done good by giving them a sticker.

2 If you get ten or more tackles during a football game, you will get a sticker for your helmet. (positive)

If you mess around during practice, you will have more conditioning at the end of practice. (negative)

  11. In Negative Reinforcement a particular behavior is strengthened by the consequence of the stopping or avoiding of a negative condition.
Positive reinforcement is superior to punishment in altering behavior

In basketball practice, a negative reinforcement would be having to do pushups for a missed layup.
A positive reinforcement would be making a lay up in a game and receiving a "good job" or a high five.

  12. Positive reinforcement: the adding of an appetitive stimulus to increase a certain behavior or response.
Example: Father gives candy to his daughter when she picks up her toys.

Negative reinforcement: the taking of an aversive stimulus to increase certain behavior or response.
Example: Rolling up the window to block the wind.

  13. 1)A negative reinforcement is particular a behavior is strengthened by the consequence of the stopping or avoiding of a negative condition.

Example: A rat is placed in a cage and immediately receives a mild electrical shock on its feet. The shock is a negative condition for the rat. The rat presses a bar and the shock stops. The rat receives another shock, presses the bar again, and again the shock stops. The rat's behavior of pressing the bar is strengthened by the consequence of the stopping of the shock.

Driving in heavy traffic is a negative condition for most of us. You leave home earlier than usual one morning, and don't run into heavy traffic. You leave home earlier again the next morning and again you avoid heavy traffic. Your behavior of leaving home earlier is strengthened by the consequence of the avoidance of heavy traffic.

A positive reinforcement is the adding of an appetitive stimulus to increase a certain behavior or response.

Example: Father gives candy to his daughter when she picks up her toys.
