For mentally handicapped with physical defects, medicine is making great strides. For those suffering from environmental problems, many programs are available to provide intellectual stimulation.
Your Assignment:
1.) Research current methods how people with intellectual disabilities are treated.
2.) What is mainstreaming?
3.) What are the pros and cons of mainstreaming? (Make sure you include your own thoughts and opinions!!)
Due: Sunday 5/1/11 by no later than 11:59p.m.
An estimated 2.5 million people in the United States have an intellectual disability- approximately 1 persent of the United States population. Estimates also indicate that only 31 persent of individuals with intellectual disabilities are employed, although many more want to work.
ReplyDelete2. Mainstreaming- Place (a student with special needs) into a mainstream class or school.
3. Pros- all children learn in the same environment.
Cons- one teacher will not be enough for mainstreamed classrooms.
I think that kids with special needs should have more help in the class room because its harder for them to learn with all the distractions of other kids in a class.
Depending on what kind of disability they have, they could be put in a school specifically for people with disabilities or in a mainstream school.
ReplyDeleteMainstreaming is putting someone with disabilities in a regular public school.
Pros- They get the interaction with other kids not just those with disabilities. They can learn what a classroom looks like and how it functions normally.
Cons- Some won't be able to learn the things that normal kids do making them "on their own" learning things. They can become almost as though they aren't in the class anymore and loose everything that their parents wanted for them in the first place.
There are many ways to treat an intellectual disabled person, but really the best way is to treat them as a normal human being. This is shown in the social model. The Social Model helps people with disabilities be accepted as regular people who make important contributions to their families and communities.
ReplyDeleteMainstreaming is the practice or idea of keeping mildly mentally retarded children in regular academic classrooms.
The pros of mainstreaming is that the disabled person would learn a little more on how to react and live in the social environment.
The con of it could be that they would be a distraction and slow the learning of the students around them.
1.)Children with intellectual disabilities are treated alright by teachers in school. The teachers normally help them reach what goals need to be reached for them. However, most students will make fun of the intellectually disabled. This is because they are just different from what we are used to.
ReplyDelete2.)Mainstreaming in the context of education is a term that refers to the practice of educating students with special needs in regular classes during specific time periods based on their skills.
3.)A few pros include: the children will be in the same learning environment, children will interact together, mainstreamed students may learn basics from other children. These are all very good things for these people. A few cons would be: more severe children will need extra help, one teacher will not be enought for a mainstreamed classroom (have to hire more teachers), attention may be taken away from some students for the mainstreamed students. These are all bad things. I dont think mainstreaming is a good thing honestly. Robert Johnson does just fine by himself and he also gets to still see us even though hes not in a single class with us.
1) Some people with intellectual disabilities need constant care while others do okay with people just looking after them. Some are capable of being around other people in a public school, but some need to be in a special school for one on one.
ReplyDelete2)Mainstreaming in the context of education is a term that refers to the practice of educating students with special needs in regular classes during specific time periods based on their skills.
3) I think it is good to have them in a class around other people, but then it's also wrong because they can't keep up. Having Robert in our class has taught that.
1.) Pills is one method of treating intellectual disabilities. Putting those kind of people in a focus group is another.
ReplyDelete2.) the practice of keeping mildly mentally retarded children in regular academic classrooms.
3.) Pros are, mainstreamed students may learn basic skills from others, Classroom will be adjusted to fit all needs, students will learn in the same evironment. Cons are, one teacher will not be enough for mainstreamed classrooms, attention may be taken away from others to focus on special needs children.
Many intellectual disabilities are treated by independent learning classes called SPED. Special Education for special educational needs.
ReplyDeleteMainstreaming is the "run of the mill" process of education. Regular classes, regular teachers, and regular curriculum.
Mainstreaming doesnt cater to the special high ability learners or the SPED kids. Exponential progress isn't always made. But mainstreaming provides a basis for which the average kids can gain a quality education. :)
People with intellectual disabilities are mistreated in society. They get stared at and ignored. People need to realize that even though they may have disabilities, they are human beings and deserve to be treated with respect.
ReplyDeleteMainstreaming is known as the common current thought of the majority.
Some pros and cons of mainstreaming include:
all children learn in the same environment while more severe children will need extra help, mainstreamed students may learn basic skills from others while a teacher may not be able to handle mainstreamed students, and finally the Classroom will be adjusted to fit all needs but attention may be taken away from others to focus on special needs children.
1. para's are avaialable for extra help for classroom help and guidence during testing. Resource techers are available for one-on-one teching unlike classroom work.
ReplyDelete2. Mainstreaming in the context of education is a term that refers to the practice of educating students with special needs in regular classes during specific time periods based on their skills
3. pros in the classroom would be learning social skills as in following directions, sharing, listening, ect. all the things that we know how to do and were taught a long time ago that the special needs kids havent learned yet. Cons would be that the kids would not get one-on-one attention, the would have major distractions and mainly not be able to focus in and pay attention to detaail.
1.) Some treatment options for the intellectually disabled are; therapeutics, special education, and the application of some psychological methods.
ReplyDelete2.) Mainstreaming is intellectually disabled students are put in a special education enviroment becasue they cant properly function in a normal classroom enviroment.
3.) I think that mainstreaming is good. It gives intellectually disabled people more of a chance to learn because they are alonw with a teacher and can concentrate better on what they are doing. Mainstreaming isn't good because it doesn't give the intellectually disabled a chancce to learn more social skills like an average student in a normal class enviroment.
Current methods of how people with intellectual disabilities are treated vary. However, two methods are to have the person live with friends, family, or an appointed individual, and teach them to provide for themselves. Another method is to introduce the person into clinical therapy sessions.
ReplyDeleteThe benefits of mainstreaming are that the individual with problems can spend time in a regular classroom with regular people, as opposed to with the individual's peers. Another is that they can get used to the challenge of regular life.
The cons are that the performance, concentration, results, and attitude of the regular students would most likely suffer, and the regular students could con the mentally challenged individual into doing something that is hazardous.
Treatment of intellectual disablilties vary according to the severity of the disability. They can either be kept in a natural home enviroment where they receive the necessary help. Or they can be put into a special enviroment where they need constant care. Mainstreaming is when the individual is put into the regular classroom so they can better adapt to normal life. This can also be harmful because the individual may not be able to handle the pressure put on them, or may be to difficult for the individual to grasp.
ReplyDeleteMainstreaming is the process of education.
ReplyDeleteMainstreaming doesnt cater to the special high ability learners or the sped kids. Mainstreaming provides a basis for which the average kids can gain a quality education.

mainstreaming is the general and common thought of a general group of people.
ReplyDeletethe pro for mainstreaming is its suffecient and saves time.
con is it doesnt help everyone just a majority
