Schedules of Reinforcement (Blog #8)

So far we have discussed methods of reinforcement which are continuous. That means every time a behavior occurs, reinforcement is given. Examples: Positive and negative reinforcements that strengthen a response, punishments which weaken a response, and finally shaping and chaining which deal with reinforcing closer approximations and sequences of certain behaviors. Now we are going to discuss schedules of reinforcement.

Your Assignment:

1.) Explain what the purpose is behind a partial reinforcement schedule.
2.) Identify the four different kinds of partial reinforcement schedules, and briefly distinguish between the four.
3.) If you were to train a dog tricks which partial reinforcement schedule would extinguishing that behavior be the most difficult, and why?

Due: Sunday 2/26/12 by no later than 11:59p.m.

  1. 1) To help people learn and work on there problems or to help them out.
2)Variable ratio-reinforcment occurs after a desired behavior occurs.
Fixed Ratio-reinforcement occurs after the desired act is performed a specific number of times.
Variable Interval-reinforcement occurs afer varying amounts of time if a desired act occurs.
Fixed Interval-reinforcement is received after a fixed amount of time has passed if the desired act occurs.
3)Variable interval because it varys whcih makes it difficult for the dog to pick up right away if you vary.

  2. 1. Reinforcement is not given each time an act is preformed.
    2. Variable Ratio
    Fixed Ratio
    Variable Interval
    Fixed Interval
    3. I think that the Fixed Interval would be the most difficult because it takes time and patience to work with a dog and if you force it on them then you wont get anything done.

  3. 1. reinforcement is not given each time an act is performed.
    2. variable ratio
    fixed ratio
    variable interval
    fixed interval
    3. I think the hardest reinforcement would be fixed interval because it would take a of time.

  4. 1.Reinforcement is not given each time an act is performed.
    2. Fixed Ratio: Reinforcement occurs after the desired act is performed a specific amount of times
Variable Ratio: Reinforcement occurs after a desired behavior occurs, but a different number of the desired acts are required each time
Variable Interval: Reinforcement occurs after varying amounts of time if desired act occurs
Fixed interval: Reinforcement is recieved after a fixed amount of time has passed if the desired act occurs.
    3. Variable Ratio because you never know when it will happen.

  5. 1.a person or animal does not get a reward eachtime a defired act is performed.
    2. varable ratio given after a number of behaviors. fixed ratio after fixed number of behaviors. variable intervals gaven after a variable amount of time. fixed intervals given after a fixed amount of time.
3.fixed interval because it is on time and the same behavior all the time so.

  6. 1. it is when the organism is not being continuously reinforced.
    2. variable ratio is reinforcement is given after a variable number of behaviors, fixed ratio reinforcement is given after a fixed number of behaviors, variable interval reinforcement is given after a variable amount of time, fixed interval reinforcement is given after a fixed amount of time.
    3. fixed interval would be hardest because you have to go a certain amount of times.

  7. 1. To avoid becoming dependent on reward.
    2. Variable Ratio- number of behaviors until reward varies, Fixed Ratio- number of behaviors until reward is the same, Variable Interval- amount of time before reward varies, Fixed Interval- amount of time before reinforcement is the same.
    3. Fixed Interval, the dog is used to doing a trick at a certain time to get reinforced so he stopping would be hard.

  8. 1. it is reinforcement is not givent each time an act is performed.
    2. it is continous, schedules, variable and partial reinforcement.
    3. i would use contunous reinforcement because it would keep doing the trick over and over for a periode of time

  9. 1) Reinforcement is not given each time an act is performed.
2)-Variable Ratio- Given after a variable number of behaviors.
    - Fixed Ration- Given after a fixed number of behaviors.
    - Variable Interval- Given after a variable amount of time.
    - Fixed Interval- Given after a fixed amount of time.
3)Fixed Ratio because affection is often the only reinforcement dogs need to learn incredibly complex behaviors.

  10. 1) The purpose behind a partial reinforcement schedule is to keep a certain behavior from extinguishing.
    2) The four different kinds of partial reinforcement schedules are fixed ratio, variable ratio, fixed interval, and variable interval.
    3) I choose fixed ratio because then the dog would be reinforced after doing the trick a certain number of times each time so you could choose to use reinforcement after one time of the given behavior.

  11. 1- if you give some reward, then they will want to do it again to get the reward. even if you don't give it all the time.

2-Variable interval is a reward at different times. Fixed interval is a reward after a certain amount of time. Variable ratio is a changing amount of times before the reward. Fixed ratio is a reward after a certain number times.

3- Variable ratio because they will always think that the next time they do the trick that they will get the reward. they will always remember that they could get the treat next time.

  12. 1- A schedule of reinforcement is a rule stating which instances of a behavior will be reinforced.

2- Positive reinforcement: the adding of an appetitive stimulus to increase a certain behavior or response.

Positive punishment: the adding of an aversive stimulus to decrease a certain behavior or response.

Negative reinforcement: the taking away of an aversive stimulus to increase certain behavior or response.

Negative punishment: the taking away of an appetitive stimulus to decrease a certain behavior.

3- no, if you positively reinforce the dog he should learn what the signals mean so it would figure out the signals to know whether or not it did the trick right.
