Methods of Treatment and Political Correctness (Blog #15)

Mental retardation is usually present at birth, discovered at a young age, and affects quite a large number of people. There are about five million people with notable retardation in the United States. Mental retardation is defined as sub-average intellectual functioning in which an individual is unable to handle tasks appropriate to his or her physical age. Learning ability and social adjustment are impaired.

Your Assignment:

1.) First, research the current, more politically correct way psychologists classify and define "mental retardation". [Do they still use "mental retardation" or something else?] Make sure to include your thoughts and opinions on the word usage and possible changes made in defining "mental retardation".
2.) Briefly explain the classification of the different levels of IQ and the characteristics of that individual.

  1. 1)Intelligence Quotient. I like the new name
2)The first English-language IQ test, the Terman-Binet, was adapted from an instrument used to measure potential to achieve developed by Binet in France. Terman translated the test and employed it as a means to measure intellectual capacity based on oral language, vocabulary, numerical reasoning, memory, motor speed and analysis skills. The mean score on the currently available IQ tests is 100, with a standard deviation of 15 (WAIS/WISC-IV) or 16 (Stanford-Binet). Sub-average intelligence is generally considered to be present when an individual scores two standard deviations below the test mean. Factors other than cognitive ability (depression, anxiety, etc.) can contribute to low IQ scores; it is important for the evaluator to rule them out prior to concluding that measured IQ is "significantly below average".The following ranges, based on Standard Scores of intelligence tests, reflect the categories of the American Association of Mental Retardation, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV-TR, and the International Classification of Diseases-10

  2. 1.Mental retardation (MR) is a generalized disorder appearing before adulthood, characterized by significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors. I think that this is very important.
2.Your child takes an IQ test. You get the score back. You learn that your child, with an IQ score of 150, falls into the highly gifted range. What does that mean?

  3. The more politically correct way to say it is intellectual disability. mental retardation is a generalized disorder appearing before adulthood, characterized by significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors

  4. 1) Intellectual Disability- I think that they changed it because it was used a derogitive term.
    2) To be classified they are around a 770 or under. They do not test as high and can not comprehind what is being asked of them.

  5. 2. their IQ levels arent as high as normal peoples and they have different characteristics.

  6. 1)Mental retardation is a condition diagnosed before age 18 that includes below-average general intellectual function, and a lack of the skills necessary for daily living.
    -They also use mentally chalenged.
2)I dont like using the word mental retardation because of the word retaration it just sounds wrong.
About 75–80 percent of mental retardation is familial (runs in families), and 20–25 percent is due to organic problems, such as chromosomal abnormalities or brain damage. Mild to severe mental retardation is a symptom of several hundred single-gene disorders and many chromosomal abnormalities, including small deletions.

  7. 1)mental retardation is described as the lack of normal development. In today's world they use the term handicap. I think that handicap is probably a better term but would still basically be kind of a downer term.
    2)Profound mental retardation Below 20
    Severe mental retardation 20–34
    Moderate mental retardation 35–49
    Mild mental retardation 50–69
    Borderline intellectual functioning 70-84

  8. 1. They call it intellectual disability. I think they could still call mental retardation because thats what it is.
    2. Everyone has different intelligence. We are all intelligent just we all have different kinds of it.

  9. 1) Intellecual Disability. I like the intellecual disability better than mental retardation because retardation is taken in a negative way.

    2) To have intellecual disability you have an IQ under 70.

  10. 1-Mental retardation (MR) is a generalized disorder appearing before adulthood, characterized by significantly impaired cognitive functioning and deficits in two or more adaptive behaviors.

    2-Class IQ

    Profound mental retardation Below 20

    Severe mental retardation 20–34

    Moderate mental retardation 35–49

    Mild mental retardation 50–69

    Borderline intellectual functioning 70–84

  11. 1- metal retardation is now intellectual disabilities and/or intellectual challenges. i think that it is wrong to call someone retarded but in a medical sense i can't see anything wrong with that.

2- IQs under 70 is minor retardation, under 50 is moderate retardation, under 35 is severe retardation, and under 20 is profound retardation.
