Stimulus Generalization (Blog #4)






One day little Albert is extremely startled when he hears the doorbell, and he begins to cry uncontrollably. In the days that follow, stimulus generalization occurs. (*Chapter 7)


Your Assignment:

1.) Define Stimulus Generalization
2.) Describe in detail what might happen during the following days.
3.) How would you extinguish his fear?

    2) The more little Albert hears the doorbell, the more accustomed to it he will become. He may still continue to cry, but over and period of time he will learn that the doorbell won't hurt him and he will get used to it. It will be no big deal.
    3) I would hold him while while continuing to ring the door bell, showing him that there is nothing to be afraid, that the doorbell is just a noise, not something that will harm him. I might even turn it into a game. Every time the bell rang and he didn't cry I'd give him a treat or something to give him a reason to associate the bell with good things.

    2. Any loud noise will scare Albert and stop him from doing what he is doing. Albert will stop playing with the rat because he is scared of the noise.
    3. To extinguish this fear you might give the child candy every time he hears a very loud noise. Plus you might slowly allow the child to be around the rat so that he is not scared anymore.

    2. The baby was scared from one stimulus, the door bell, so whenever another stimulus that sounds like the first stimulus the baby will react the same.
    3. Give him a stimulus to not fear the doorbell, like saying someones here everytime the doorbell rings, that way the baby will be conditioned to expect someone at the door and not a fearful event.

    2.) He heard the doorbell once so after that, every sound similar to the doorbell, he freaks out.

    3.) Let him hear the doorbell but have him see someone coming up so he will expect the doorbell when he sees the person coming to the door.
